Why iCloud is Really Important

Tunecore CEO, Jeff Price, recently published an article explaining how iCloud, Apple’s new cloud streaming service which sounds very similar to the previously announced Amazon streaming service, is actually a very significant game changer.

Among Jeff’s points is the reality that iCloud could finally monetize songs that had not been paid for by users the first time around. iCloud will scan users’ iTunes libraries and match songs for which Apple has licenses (they have negotiated complex deals with all of the majors) regardless of whether or not the users originally paid for them or ripped them from CDs.

This along with the possibility (we won’t know until some serious litigation has taken place) that the streaming of the songs will be considered “public performance” of the works could also mean significant revenue increases for songwriters.
